
What Is an Ignition Lock Cylinder and Why Does It Fail?
The ignition lock cylinder is the mechanical tumbler assembly your key physically enters to start your vehicle. Unlike the electronic ignition switch behind it, the cylinder is a purely mechanical component with internal wafers or pins that align with your key's cuts. Over time — especially in older vehicles common across Westchester County's colder winters — these internal components wear, corrode, or accumulate debris. Symptoms include a key that turns too loosely, a key that sticks or won't turn at all, a cylinder that won't return to the 'off' position, or a key you simply can't remove after shutting the engine down. Ignoring these signs typically leads to a complete failure at the worst possible moment.
Worn wafers are the single most common cause of ignition cylinder failure we see in the field. When the wafers no longer hold tension properly, the cylinder may spin freely without engaging the ignition switch — meaning the engine won't start even though the key turns.
